Products/Ingredients to Avoid for Oily Skin

People with oily skin sometimes have a tendency to go overboard with trying to control their oil.  Be sure not to use anything that isn’t meant for your skin type because it could strip too much moisture from the skin.  Remember, oil and moisture are two different things.  Everyone, regardless of skin type, needs moisture.

If you have oily skin, stay away from these common ingredients/products:
  • Mineral oil – doesn’t clog pores because it’s molecularly too large but it does make you look & feel greasy
  • Petrolatum/Vaseline
  •  Petroleum
  • Parafin Oil
  • Coco Butter
  • Coconut Oil
  • Castor Oil – promotes inflammation

Petroleum and mineral oil especially are very occlusive, meaning they don’t let your skin breathe.  It just sits on top and blocks your skin/pores from getting air.  Oily skin is already more prone to breakouts and clogged pores so using products with these ingredients will make those breakouts more frequent and harder to get rid of.
Look for skin care and cosmetic products that say “oil free,” exfoliate on a regular basis, and use a purifying mask at least twice a week.  Depending on your oil production and breakouts a mask with tea tree oil or sulfur may be needed to help control excess oil.
